Dave Monet joined the staff of the U. S. Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station in 1984. His professional interest is astrometry, and in particular the applications of new observing technologies to the classic problem of the measurement of stellar parallax and proper motion. His work in the 1980s pioneered the use of Charge Coupled Devices (CCDs) for accurate ground-based parallax observations, and his work in the 1990s and 2000s has concentrated on the digitization of the great photographic sky surveys, the production of large star catalogs such as the USNO-A and USNO-B series, and the application of CCD astrometric techniques to the new generation of large etendue CCD surveys (Pan-STARRS, SkyMapper, and LSST) to enable the measurement of parallax, proper motion, and astrometric perturbations (or upper limits) for many billions of stars. Dave's involvement in the Kepler mission is to assist in processing the astrometric signals in the Kepler data with the goal of measuring the parallaxes for many stars including those with transiting planets.
